Why Are You Sabotaging Your Business?

Every day on social media I see Scentsy consultants who are self-sabotaging their business. I don’t know if they’re afraid to succeed or if they genuinely don’t want to succeed.

For the purpose of this post, I am referring success in the sense of Scentsy consultants who say they want to build a business, to lead a team and reach top ranks.

These are also the same consultants who are struggling in their business but say they are trying. They say they’ve done everything they can and yet it’s still not coming together for them. I disagree. Remember there is no try, you either do it or you don’t. If they truly did everything they wouldn’t be struggling.

One person is not solely responsible for what all their team members do or don’t do. One person can’t make any team member sell or recruit if those team members don’t choose to. However, if that one person feels he or she has a team that is mainly comprised of personal or very part time users, then one person can get more team members.

Wouldn’t it be nice if it were as easy as going to the store to get more team members?  I’m not suggesting it is easy; but it is simple. Selecting a Scentsy Sponsor

Before you join Scentsy you need to select a sponsor; but before you select a sponsor, do your homework and choose wisely.

selecting a scentsy sponsorIt’s interesting to watch the ambulance chasing that occurs on Facebook and elsewhere online when someone says, “I’m thinking about joining Scentsy.”

Under No Obligation

Just because someone messages you first or happens to be someone you contacted first does not mean that you have to join that person’s team. Just because someone emailed and/or snail mailed you some information does not mean you are committed to joining with that person.

Take some time, do your due diligence and find the right sponsor for you.  I would strongly discourage you from looking for the best offer. It won’t take you any time at all to find offers for free this or that if you join this team or that team. I’m sure you can even find someone who will provide a way for you to join her team for free.

What’s Important to You

For the record, it’s against most direct selling company’s policies, Scentsy’s included, as well as the DSA Code of Conduct to offer any enticements to get people to join your team. That includes offer to pay for starter kits, extra products, perks or anything monetarily extra if you join their team. Scentsy is a Personal Preference

Dear Scentsy Consultant: You are doing your business a disservice, and will ultimately hurt it if you promote Scentsy as anything other than a PERSONAL PREFERENCE.

how to use scentsyEveryone’s nose works differently. Everyone’s personal preference is entirely different. Other than the mechanics of our products (correct watt light bulb, water in the diffuser, scent soft in the fabric softener bin of your washer, etc.) you should not be giving ANY specific and quantitative values on how many cubes of wax, how many drops of oils, how many scoops of whiffs, etc.
 
The most important thing you can do for your customers is to inform them how every single person is different and they will find their own preference and have their own experience. It’s not being evasive; it’s being smart, truthful and helpful.

Are You Over-Promising and Under-Delivering?

Consider this – if you think a scent is very strong and only use a half or one cube and tell me that is good to start with, I may not be able to smell a darn thing with that and then I’ll feel duped and that Scentsy doesn’t work.
 
Likewise if you tell me you use 4, 6 or 8 cubes at a time and it lasts a week, so I try it, and it was indeed, “Wow!” strong the first day or so, then I start to become anosmic to it and by day three I couldn’t really smell it anymore, I’ll feel duped and that Scentsy doesn’t work.
 
I would personally never tell anyone to only change it once a week. I want to sell wax and I want my customers to mix it up so that they don’t become too immune to the scent. Others will disagree with me on that, which illustrates my point, there isn’t a way to experience Scentsy, there are many ways.

Being self-employed has many perks. You can find plenty of articles about the benefits of working for yourself and being home based.  But you won’t often find too much on the challenges of being self-employed.

If you are not self-disciplined or self-motivated you may have a hard time finding success working for yourself. You can be the world’s best boss or the world’s worst boss.

It’s as simple as if you don’t work, you don’t get paid.

Tricks to Keep the Self Employed Gainfully Employed

I was going to say Tips to Motivate the Self Employed, but let’s be honest. If you’re reading this, you don’t need a tip, you probably already know what needs to be done. You just need to figure out a way to put a fire under your butt to make it happen. I sometimes have to play mind games with myself. One of the more effective tactics is:

  1. Punishment Reward – If I’d rather do something else then I force myself “Do this FIRST, then you can do THAT.” For example, if I want to catch up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, FIRST I have to write a blog post, publish it, post, tweet and pin it. THEN I can check in to see what’s the latest with Meredith and her pals.

Well that’s it. I have one trick to offer because that is what works for me. There’s no shortage of ways you can use this.

  • Need to make phone calls to past hosts? Phone calls is one activity that can bring in great results, yet it is often dreaded by many. Before you can check in on your social media accounts, you HAVE to call three people. THEN you can check in on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat or wherever you hang.
  • Behind in logging bookkeeping and expenses? Don’t even think about taking a break make cookies or run to that estate sale until you update QuickBooks and file those receipts.

First THIS (necessary but less desirable) then THAT (something you want to do).
